Position Summary:

Serve as licensed electrician with responsibilities for installation, repair, inspections, certifications, cost estimates, and training.

Reports to: Assistant Director of Facilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed electrician.
  • A suitable combination of education, credentials, and experience may be substituted for minimum qualifications.

Job Duties:

  • Apply safety precaution pertaining to:
    • Safety regulations and procedures; chemical safety, hazard communication program; personal protective equipment;
    • lifting procedures, back injury prevention;
    • lockout/tagout procedures flammable storage, housekeeping;
    • fire extinguisher training.
  • Lay out, assemble and install wiring in University buildings in accordance with blueprints and NEC. Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits, appliances, systems, facilities, and related electrical controls and devices.
  • Inspect and certify work is in compliance with state and local electrical codes.
  • Plan, estimate and commission new installations or renovations of electrical systems or equipment.
  • Assist in the training of new personnel.
  • Calculate power requirements for electrical systems (conductors, protective devices, physical protection) Service batteries (lead acid, Nicad, Lead Calcium)
  • Troubleshoot motors, motor control circuits, across the line starters, reduce voltage starters (auto transformer, resister), reversing starters, and electrical systems in hazardous locations, battery banks and battery chargers.
  • Inspect and maintain power conditioners. Repair/replace electrical appliances in general and electronic facilities.
  • Troubleshoot battery banks, battery chargers, power conditioners.
  • Install, troubleshoot, maintain and repair most types of electrical systems and equipment. Interpret plans, sketches, wiring diagrams, and specifications; identify all electrical terms and symbols.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of National Electrical Codes and City Ordinances
  • Skill in the observance of safety procedures
  • Skill in determining the most feasible installation, techniques, and procedures.
  • Skill in performing precision work neatly and accurately.
  • Skill in performing work without damaging structural soundness.
  • Skill in the installation of conduit.
  • The ability to follow instructions.
  • Skill in the use and interpretation of numerous testing devices.
  • Ability to think logically and analytically.
  • Willingness to assume responsibility for work performed.
  • Well-versed in electrical codes and theory
  • Skill in maintaining and repairing motors and controls for boilers and chillers
  • Ability to perform day-to-day preventative maintenance (change ballasts, electric outlets, light bulbs, etc.)

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
  • May work on and around slippery surfaces such as construction sites after is has rained.
  • Subject to working from ladders or on floors with no surrounding walls, etc., 12 feet or more above ground level.
  • Subject to working near moving machinery, power tools, and vehicles in motion.
  • Exposed to steady and loud noise from machinery and equipment.
