Position Summary:

The Personal Counselor is responsible for providing individual and group counseling services for personal, interpersonal, and academic concerns to students. The Personal Counselor supports the department of Counseling Services with training and outreach, crisis intervention and emergency coverage, and consultation with parents, faculty, and off-campus mental health professionals.

The Personal Counselor reports to the Director of Counseling Services, which is a department within the division of Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidate must hold a master’s degree in counseling, or similar psychology based discipline and may be under supervision for licensure.
  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements
  • The candidate must meet Oklahoma licensure requirements, which includes possession of LPC, LMFT, LADC and/or LCSW.
  • A master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work or counseling-related area is required.

Job Duties:

Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the University.

Provide personal counseling services:

  • Conduct intake and screening of university clients.
  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling for personal, interpersonal, multi-cultural, academic concerns, and career counseling and assessment to a culturally diverse campus population.
  • Maintain highest ethical standards according to Oklahoma statutes and standards in the mental health professions.
  • Maintain current files on all student clients.
  • Provide emergency response for sexual assault.
  • Provide crisis intervention and on-call emergency coverage as appropriate.
  • Consult with parents, faculty and off-campus mental health professionals as needed and permitted by confidentiality.
  • Refer clients to appropriate mental health providers as necessary.

Provide support for the department of Counseling Services:

  • Identify topics of concern to the institution and develop, administer and present educational outreach programming that addresses those topics at least twice per regular semester.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of departmental publications and website.
  • Regularly assess services and programs.
  • Conduct evening and weekend events as appropriate.

Provide support for the division of Student Affairs:

  • Support Counseling Services and Student Affairs efforts to manage instances of negative student conduct and assist in student judicial matters
  • Assist with the development and implementation of New Student Orientation.
  • Serve on campus committees and task forces as requested.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain the highest ethical standards according to state requirements and mental health standards
  • Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  • Ability to maintain appropriate licensure and/or certifications required to deliver counseling, training and other mental health outreach
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of best practices and trends related to counseling and mental health services in a higher education setting
  • Familiarity with Title IX and related student conduct policies and practices

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Physical Demands: 

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.
  • Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.
  • Frequently communicates with university constituents.
  • Frequently remains in a stationary position (standing and/or sitting). Occasionally moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another.
  • Occasionally moves common office materials.

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
  • Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.
  • Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; some overtime may be required.
  • Off-campus, state and regional travel may be required.
