The Senior Accountant has overall responsibility for day-to-day operations and administration of accounting services including timely and accurate transaction processing, account analysis, reconciliations, and other activities. The Senior Accountant has specific responsibility for accounting of gifts, pledges, accounts receivable and cash receipts.
The Senior Accountant reports to the Assistant Controller and is a member of the Financial Accounting Services team. The Senior Accountant assists with the training and oversight for staff accountants.
The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and ranges from $48,000 to $51,000 annually.
- A minimum of three years of directly related accounting experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education, education, and/or non-profit environments is preferred.
- Demonstrate and attitude and behavior that reflects the mission and values of the department and the University.
- Lead daily accounting operations including preparing and/or reviewing appropriate ledger entries and reconciliations, assigned entries, calculations, etc.
- Assist with reviewing the work of accounting staff to ensure accuracy, timelines, compliance, and other quality measures.
- Initiate and oversee periodic reports, reconciliations, and other workpapers of assigned areas and accounts.
- Oversee and directly participates in monthly, quarter-end, and year-end closings.
- Assists with overseeing and performing required tax and compliance reporting.
- Assists with overseeing the annual audit process for the accounting team; distribute and ensure timely completion of audit papers; liaise with auditors as needed.
- Assists with ensuring accounting processes, procedures, and outcomes follow established best accounting practices and regulations on University, State, and Federal levels.
- Provide analysis including researching and analyzing complex accounting problems Perform and oversee complex or advanced reconciliations.
- Oversee gift and pledge accounting processes and acts as primary liaison with University Advancement department.
- Assists with managing and monitoring of treasury and receivable functions of the University, including coordination with related processes in the University Bursar/Student Accounts department, and banking activities.
- Identify and evaluate emerging systems and technologies to improve accounting efficiencies; make and implement recommendations to improve accounting processes and procedures as directed by management, may assist, with certain recruiting activities, training, and other actions to develop and support a cohesive accounting team.
- Build and maintain a culture of quality and respectful service with internal and external customers.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the University’s integrated administrative information system, Banner.
- Assist the Assistant Controller, Controller and/or Chief Financial Officer in special projects, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Ability to develop and establish financial policies and procedures
- Ability to work independently, with little supervision
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
- Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience accounting for complex transactions
- Ability to work effectively in a collegial manner across all levels of the institution
- Strong technical and computer skills required with highly developed attention to detail
- Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple priorities
- Knowledge of computer-based accounting systems
- Strong knowledge and experience with usage of Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel with ability to work intermediate to advanced formulas, functions, and features.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
- Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.
- Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; some overtime may be required.
- Off-campus, state and regional travel may be required.
