This position constructs dance new costumes, repairs and alters existing costumes, assists in maintaining the Dance and Entertainment Costume Shop, and assists students in costume alterations and construction.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of experience in clothing construction is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with dance costumes and their production is desired.
- Construct new costumes; craft costume pieces and accessories.
- Alter, repair, and re-construct existing costumes.
- Assist with costume fitting.
- Costume laundry; shop and storage organization/ inventory
- Teach sewing skills to costume lab students; assist in oversight of student employees’ sewing work
- Seek technical guidance from Costumer / Costume Shop Foreman
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to construct costumes for dance.
- Ability to alter existing costumes.
- Ability to operate industrial and home sewing machine and serger.
- Knowledge of dance costume construction is a plus.
- Ability to communicate with director, costumers, and shop foreman to execute designs and meet deadlines.
- Ability to operate washers and dryers.
- Good organizational skills and time management.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Manual dexterity and vision to efficiently operate sewing machine/serger and execute hand sewing daily.
- Must be able to lift and carry costumes and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, and reach on a daily basis.
- Sewing machine and serger noise.
- Work with sharp objects.
- Soiled costume laundry.
- Work with adhesives and some aerosols.
- May need to use 8’ ladder.
