Position Summary:

The Scenic Technician supports various productions through collaboration with staff and students to construct, assemble, paint, and rig scenery as well as participate actively in all technical projects assigned to the scene shop. Additionally, the technician supports stagecraft lab curriculum through training and oversight of lab assignments and activities.

The Technician reports to the Theatre Operations Manager and is a member of the School of Theatre staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of professional theatrical scenic construction is required.
  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum qualifications. (Example: a candidate with an undergraduate degree in a related field with significant experience as a student may be substituted for two years of professional experience.

Job Duties:

  • Demonstrates an attitude and behaviors that reflects the mission and values of the university and department.
  • Builds scenic elements for assigned productions through collaboration with designers. Production projects may include (but are not limited to) platform and flat construction, trim detail fabrication, automation, tracked or static installations, lighting, props, painting, and other areas as needed.
  • Works load-ins and safely delivers/transports scenic elements as needed.
  • Ensures maintenance of scenic elements throughout productions.
  • Works strikes restoring, breaking down, and/or storing scenic elements as needed.
  • Stage carpentry and working experience of scenic design and construction. General metalworking, welding, and frame layout.
  • Updates Theatre Operations Manager regarding work progress, issues, and other factors to ensure projects are delivered on time and as expected.
  • Participates in curriculum delivery for stagecraft labs including instruction and supervision of student assignments and projects.
  • Train and supervise students in basic theater technology skills.
  • Follows all OSHA and state mandated safety guidelines to create a safe workplace.
  • Maintains shop tools and equipment, including a clean and efficient work space.
  • Work with COPA staff, faculty and guest artists in other capacities to assist in mounting COPA productions.
  • Interface with guest artists to assess needs and available resources for non-COPA productions and events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Operational characteristics and techniques used in theater production.
  • Operations, services and activities of technical operations of theatre programs.
  • Principles, methods, materials, equipment and tools used in technical operations.
  • Principles and practices of stage rigging.
  • Stage carpentry and working experience of scenic design and construction.
  • Theater pre‐performance, performance, and post‐performance activities.
  • An interest in the world of theatre and a good awareness of the industry and its workings
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Ensure the safe technical operations of the theatre venues.
  • Operate and maintain equipment, materials, tools, and supplies used in technical production and set design.
  • Evaluate equipment needs and notify Operations Manager of need to repair or replace equipment.
  • Troubleshoot theater equipment and computer problems.
  • Utilize standard office equipment including computers and related software applications.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and to solve problems.
  • The ability to support a team in a production situation
  • Read and draft scale drawings and scenic plans.
  • Operate a box truck (preferred).
  • Develop a rapport with students and work well with design staff and Theatre faculty.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily indoors, but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
  • Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, when not in production.
  • Attendance at evening and weekend events is regularly required.
  • Off-campus, state and regional travel is sometimes required.
  • Incumbent will be exposed to frequent noise caused by shop machinery, musical equipment, telephones and office machines.
    This is a 12 month position.
