Position Summary:

The Director of Counseling Services oversees the day-to-day operations of counseling services as well as provides short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and mental health outreach services to enhance the psychological and emotional welfare of students and the university community. The Director will also provide leadership in coordinating university outreach and educational programs with other university departments and units.

The Director oversees two counselors and reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience in clinical assessment and counseling.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in supervising staff is highly preferred.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain appropriate licensure and credentials.
  • Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the Division of Student Affairs, the Counseling department and the University.
  • Provide leadership and direction on the purpose, mission, and vision of Counseling Services and develop a shared mission and service delivery among the staff.
  • Provide counseling and crisis intervention for students including maintaining case notes, coordinating with mental health entities and agencies, coordinating with on-campus constituents and other resources, as needed, to assist students and campus community members.
  • Review and recommend appropriate assessment instruments and other clinical interventions and mental health programs for students.
  • Responsible for the effective delivery of training in related areas to diverse populations including students, residence life staff, faculty, and other university constituents.
  • Maintain awareness and compliance related to VAWA, Clery, the Campus SaVE Act and any other relevant state or federal requirements.
  • Develop policies and protocols that are appropriate for the efficient and effective daily operations of Counseling Services.
  • Research and apply current trends and best practices for the delivery of counseling services in a higher education setting.
  • Serve as a member of the Campus Assessment Response and Education (CARE) Team.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and application of the university’s Title IX/Nondiscrimination policy and procedures.
  • Serve as a confidential reporting source for Title IX policy violations including sexual harassment and sexual assault.
  • Cultivate professional relationships with faculty and staff in order to develop and implement effective counseling services programming. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to maintain the highest ethical standards according to state requirements and mental health standards
• Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
• Ability to maintain appropriate licensure and/or certifications required to deliver professional counseling, training and other mental health outreach
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
• Knowledge of best practices and trends related to counseling and mental health services in a higher education setting
• Familiarity with Title IX and related student conduct policies and practices
• Demonstrated experience in successfully implementing effective programs, services and processes
• Experience in the effective management of staff and the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery. 

  • Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses. 

  • Frequently communicates with university constituents. 

  • Frequently remains in a stationary position (standing and/or sitting). 

  • Occasionally moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another. 

  • Occasionally moves common office materials.

  • Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
  • Will be exposed to periodic noise caused by telephones and office machines.
  • Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is required to attend school programs and events that may occur after hours or on weekends.
  • Off-campus, state and regional travel may be required.
